Jay loved animals, especially species that were exotic or endangered. During his junior year of high school Jay was thrilled to be selected for a volunteer position in a lab where he made salads for rescued iguanas, owls, and turtles.

Jay’s lettuce jig (version 1), made of moldable plastic and rubber bands, meant Jay could tear off bite-sized pieces without assistance.
